Water Polo Upsets #20 Wagner, 14-10
Bronx, N.Y. – (October 17, 2018) – Behind a five-goal night by Jake Miller-Tolt and 12 saves from Bailey O'Mara, the Fordham water polo team pulled out a 14-10 upset win over the 20th-ranked Wagner Seahawks at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center on Wednesday night. With the win, Fordham improved to 8-12 overall, 2-4 in the MAWPC, while Wagner fell to 10-9 on the year, 5-2 in the league. After an even first quarter at three all, Fordham scored three of the first four goals in the second quarter to open up a 6-4 lead with Dimitris Koukias netting two of those markers. After Wagner closed the gap back to one, George Maltby scored with the man-advantage for Fordham to give the Rams a 7-5 lead into halftime. Wagner rallied in the third quarter with four goals, pulling to within one, 10-9, with one quarter remaining. The Rams scored the first goal of the fourth on a marker by Koukias, but just as important, Wagner's leading scorer, Jasmin Kolasinac, who already had six of Wagner's nine goals to that point was rolled with a misconduct penalty. That gave the Rams the momentum, which kept gaining with a goal by Jake Miller-Tolt and Maltby's second extra-man goal of the game to put Fordham ahead, 13-9. An extra-man goal by Wagner and a penalty goal by Miller-Tolt closed out the scoring for a 14-10 final. The game turned out to be a coming out party for freshman goalkeeper Bailey O'Mara, who posted a season-high 12 saves, which included two stops down a man with under three minutes to play in the fourth quarter, as well as a penalty block. Offensively, Miller-Tolt led the way with five goals, two assists, and two steals, while Koukias had four goals and two steals. Maltby ended the match with two goals and a steal, with Phillip Wang, Magnus Sims, and Ian Watson rounding out the scoring. The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Saturday, October 20th, when the Rams host Connecticut College at 11:15 AM and Salem International at 6:30 PM.
