Christopher Newport Pulls Away Late from Football, 39-10


WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-7, 0-6 NJAC) made it a one-possession game in the third quarter, but visiting Christopher Newport (4-2, 3-2 NJAC) was able to pull away in the fourth for a 39-10 win Oct. 20. HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Pioneers turned a Captain fumble into a 3-0 first-quarter lead when freshman William Oertel, Jr.(Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) kicked a 34-yard field goal with 3:43 on the clock.

  • That lead held up until the 9:42 mark of the second period when junior quarterback Jack Anderson found senior Joshua Davis for a 17-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion pass to sophomore Sean Wilkinson was successful, and the Captains owned an 8-3 edge.

  • Senior defensive back B.J. Hill returned an interception 27 yards for a TD, making it a 15-3 CNU advantage 6:44 before halftime.

  • Sophomore Ben Garbarini kicked a 44-yard field goal with 0:24 on the clock, allowing Christopher Newport to take an 18-3 lead into the locker room.

  • Sophomore Siraj Abdul-Malik (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) got a piece of Garbarini's punt, giving WP the ball at the CNU-37 early in the second half. Junior quarterback Cornelius Kinchen (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) flipped the ball backwards to senior wide receiver Kyle Fanning (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey), and he lofted a pass to junior RaeQuawn Bridgeman (West Orange, N.J./Orange). The trick play worked for a 37-yard touchdown and an 18-10 score at the 11:03 mark.

  • The Captains opened the fourth quarter with a Brock Carnes two-yard scoring run (25-10, 11:36), and he added a seven-yard TD carry after a fumbled kickoff return (32-10, 11:17).

  • Christopher Newport turned an interception into seven points when freshman C.J. Donaldson rushed for nine yards, making it a 39-10 game with 5:14 remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Kinchen finished 11-for-27 for 74 yards and four interceptions.

  • Freshman running back Kobe Roberts (Somers Point, N.J./Mainland Regional) carried 10 times for 15 yards. Bridgeman caught four passes for 57 yards and a score.

  • Junior linebacker Corey Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) matched his season high with 16 tackles (12 solo, 2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack), while senior linebacker Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret)chipped in 12 stops (nine solo). Senior safety Matt Olivo (Clark, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen) collected six tackles (1.5 TFL), and freshman linebacker Mahkye Boswell (Orange, N.J./Orange) added a fumble recovery and two pass breakups to his five stops.

  • Anderson finished 11-for-19 for 93 yards and one touchdown for CNU. Junior Nehemiah Harris rushed 11 times for 55 yards, and senior Kyree Burton caught nine passes for 58 yards.

  • Six different Captains each recorded three tackles.
