Offense Explodes for 68 Points in Privateers Road Win at Castleton
The Maritime College football team tied the program record for points scored in a game as they defeated Castleton University 68-41 on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers tallied 613 yards of total offense and 33 first downs in their third consecutive win as they improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in ECFC play. Reigning ECFC Rookie of the Week, Nicholas Morman(Covington, La./Northlake Christian), got things rolling for the offense as he rushed for an 11-yard touchdown to cap off the first drive of the game. The Spartans knew they needed to respond quickly and decided to go for it on fourth-and-13 from the Privateers 48-yard line. However, Maritime's defense came up with the stop they needed and forced the turnover on downs. Senior quarterback Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh)continued his dominance this season on the ensuing drive as he found Matthew Cebulski (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) for a 6-yard touchdown pass. The Privateers jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead on the Spartans homecoming game and entered the second quarter looking to quickly put the game away. However, Castleton wasn't going away and put up an impressive 28-point second quarter to enter halftime within seven points. Maritime's run game continued to find success in the second frame as Kahlil Lewin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall) highlighted a 21-point performance in the quarter with a 61-yard touchdown run. Lewin found pay dirt for the second time in the quarter with a 10-yard receiving touchdown in the closing minutes of the half. Looking to expand its lead in the second half, Maritime's defense came up with a needed turnover as Karl Riek (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) picked off a pass on third-and-6 to give the Privateers offense great field position. Wright took over on the following drive as he rushed three different times for 30 yards and a touchdown to make it a 14-point advantage. After another key stop from the defense, Maritime's offense got back to work as Kahlil Lewin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall) found the end zone for the third time in the game with a two-yard score. Heading into the fourth quarter with a 21-point lead, Wright turned to the passing game and found Cormac Quigley (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) for a 29-yard touchdown. The Privateers defense continued to step up and they shut down the Spartans again to ice the game. Despite leading 55-28, the Privateers offense wasn't done scoring as Joseph Butterworth (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Christian Castle (Felton, Pa./Red Lion), giving Maritime a 61-28 lead with 10:40 remaining in the game. The Spartans were finally able to find the end zone again on the following drive, but Butterworth didn't let any ideas of a miracle comeback come to fruition as he scrambled for a 44-yard touchdown to answer right back. Wright finished the game 16-25 for 199 yards and three touchdown passes. Additonally, he added 10 carries and 89 yards with a touchdown to cap off another impressive offensive performance. Lewin was electric out of the backfield, picking up his first 100-yard rushing game of the season with just 11 carries and 129 yards. Morman scored twice in the game and finished with 40 yards rushing to continue his solid rookie campaign. Defensively, Liam Bailey (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) led the way with 10 tackles and one tackle for loss. The Privateers stay on the road next week as they look to make it four straight wins when they travel to Anna Maria on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
