Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Earns No. 3 Ranking in Week 8 NJCAA Poll


CHARLOTTE, N.C., October 23, 2018 – After picking up a win in their home opener this past week, the Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team moved up one spot to No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer Rankings, as announced by the NJCAA on Tuesday. The Mustangs picked up a 3-0 shutout victory at Skidelsky Field over previously unbeaten Essex County College last Thursday to improve to 9-0-1 on the year. Yolanda Albalat provided the assist on all three Mustang goals on Thursday to help lift the Mustangs to victory. Maria Santin, Angie Ponce and Laia Munoz Danon each scored in the win, while Marta Alemany picked up her first shutout of the season in net. The Mustangs rank seventh in the nation in scoring, averaging 6.2 goals per game through 10 contests. Juliana Piresleads the team with 38 points, including 15 goals, while she is tied for the team-high of eight assists with Albalat. Santin leads the Mustangs with 17 goals on the season and has a total of 35 points. Laia Munoz Danon has 23 points on nine goals and five assists. Alemany is 9-0-1 on the season with a 0.99 goals-against average across 10 starts. The Mustangs play at home once again on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when they host Region XV rival ASA College at Skidelsky Field at 5 p.m. Should Monroe win Wednesday's contest, they will have earned the 2018 Region XV Championship crowd. ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
