Wrestling Holds 2018 Media Day
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers wrestling head coach Scott Goodale and select student-athletes participated in 2018 Wrestling Media Day to preview the upcoming 2017-18 season on Tuesday afternoon at the Rutgers Athletic Center. Goodale held a press conference, while Anthony Ashnault, Matthew Correnti, Nicholas Gravina, Nick Suriano and John Van Brill all spoke with members of the local media. The Scarlet Knights return six wrestlers with NCAA Championships experience, including a 2018 national finalist in Suriano and a three-time All-American in Ashnault. Correnti, Gravina, Van Brill and Jordan Pagano will also be available for RU, which was ranked as the preseason No. 13/18 team by Intermat. No. 2 Suriano (125), No. 2 Ashnault (149), No. 9 Van Brill (157) and No. 13 Gravina (184) all appear in individual rankings by the publication. Rutgers opens the 2018-19 season when it hosts Centenary, Fresno State and Johnson & Wales on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the RAC. The quad meet will be the first of eight home events for the Scarlet Knights this season, as RU will also host Rider (Dec. 16), No. 21 Wisconsin (Jan. 11), No. 3 Oklahoma State (Jan. 13), Michigan State (Jan. 25), No. 7 Nebraska (Feb. 1), No. 18 Princeton (Feb. 3) and No. 5 Michigan (Feb. 17). Rutgers closed out the 2017-18 season with its best team finish at the NCAA Championships, finishing 11th with 42.5 points. The historic result also included the program's first national finalist in Suriano as well as a sixth-place finisher Scott DelVecchio, as the Scarlet Knights earned multiple All-Americans for the third consecutive year.
