UC Clinches E8 Tournament Berth with Win Over Fisher
Utica, NY – The Utica College women's soccer team hosted St. John Fisher Wednesday night for a crucial Empire 8 matchup. Kierra Caissey (Gardner, MA/Gardner) scored the lone goal of the match, as the Pioneers clinch a spot in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007 with the 1-0 victory. The game remained fairly quiet for the early goings of the first half, as only one shot was taken in the first 20 minutes of play. Emma Workman (Salt Lake City, UT/East) played a long ball over the top that bounced into the box, where teammate Kierra Caissey (Gardner, MA/Gardner) poked it past Fisher's keeper to put UC up 1-0. The Pioneers threatened to score again around the 10 minute mark with multiple corner kick opportunities, but the score stayed 1-0 heading into halftime. Despite St. John Fisher putting five shots on net throughout the second half, the UC defenders held firmly to keep the Cardinals from scoring. Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) made five of her six saves in the second half to help earn her fourth shutout of the year. The Pioneers are now 10-5-2 overall and 5-1-1 in E8 play, with just one game remaining in the regular season. UC hits the road on Saturday for a conference matchup against Stevens for the final match of the regular season. The game is scheduled to kick-off at 5 p.m.
