Volleyball Loses Five-Set Decision To Niagara


Niagara Falls, NY - Manhattan volleyball took Niagara to a five-set decision Sunday, October 28, before losing to the Purple Eagles 3-2 on the road. Manhattan falls to 4-22 overall this season and 2-11 in the MAAC, while Niagara improves to 9-15 and 9-6 in conference play. Highlights:

  • The Jaspers and Purple Eagles played a tight five-set match with just a seven-point (79-72) overall difference between the two teams. The match saw 28 tied scores and 14 lead changes and finished 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 15-6 to Niagara's advantage. It's just the second five-set match for Manhattan so far this season.

  • Freshman Vivian Donovan (Newport Beach, CA / Newport Harbor) reset a career-high in the match, hitting 19 kills for the Jaspers, besting all players. She also tallied a double-double by earning 11 digs.

  • Libero Reyn Hoffman (Ventura, CA / Ventura) set a career-high of her own with 22 digs, also a match-high. She added two assists and one ace.

  • Middle blocker Erin Hoener (St. Louis, MO / Incarnate Word) led the Jaspers with three blocks. She added 12 kills to the day's effort on .458 hitting, her second-best attack performance this season.

  • Senior hitter Sandra Lozanova (Pernik, Bulgaria / Fresno State) totaled a match-high six aces, the most single-match aces by a Jasper this season and bringing her season total to 26. She now ranks second in the MAAC for service aces per set (0.46).

  • The Jaspers totaled 13 aces as a team, more than doubling Niagara's total of six.

  • Setter Shruti Mangipudi (San Ramon, CA / Dougherty Valley) earned a match-high 43 assists, the third time this season she has reached more than 40 assists and nearing her career total of 47. She continues to rank 10th in the MAAC in assists per set, averaging 6.22 this season.

  • Mary Redl and Grace Hetterscheidt led the Purple Eagles with 16 kills each. Caroline Leitch followed close behind with 15 for Niagara.

  • Cameron Maris led all players with five blocks for the home team.

Up Next: Manhattan continues its road swing with away matches next weekend, first at Rider on November 3, starting at noon. It will be the first meeting of the teams this season. The Jaspers will then remain in the Garden State to take on St. Peter's for a MAAC rematch on November 4 at 1:00 p.m.
