Women's Rowing Competes at Head of the Fish
SARATOGA, SPRINGS, New York - It was a cold, rainy, and windy day on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, NY for the Women's Rowing Team on Saturday, October 27th. The Head of the Fish Regatta is an annual race that Marist rowing travels to on the last weekend of October. The regatta is known for awarding fish head plaques and medals to the first-place crews of each event. The course is shorter than the one which the women traversed last weekend in Boston, only being 3200 meters in length.
The day began for the Red Foxes in the Women's Collegiate 1x in which Bea Bradford finished in 15th place for her first race in a 1x. Shortly after was the Women's Collegiate 2x in which Marist had two entries. The "A" entry of Elisabeth Kamm and Eliza Hartford finished in 5th place while the "B" entry of Shawna Gilson and Amanda Guy finished in 12th out of 17 crews in their first 2x race. The final small boat race of the day was the women's 2- of Kaela Brunetti and Jasmine Miller who finished in 15th place. Next up for the Red Foxes was the Varsity 8+ event in which Isabelle Koch, Bernadette Winby, Elisabeth Kamm, Selena Mildon, Sydney Ford, Kate Beebe, Abbey Gragg, Marie Ryden, and Eliza Hartford competed in. The women were ready to put together an aggressive race in spite of the subpar conditions and delivered a time of 11:14.62 to clinch the top spot. They came away with a fish head and nine gold medals after finishing ahead of Williams, Wesleyan, MIT, UMass, RIT, Trinity, and more. Right after the V8+ sped down Fish Creek, the 2V8+ raced to a 5th place finish in a time of 12:25.89. The crew was composed of Caitlin Green, Shawna Gilson, Lydia Giguere, Sara Barker, Amanda Guy, McKenna Klineyoung, Elizabeth Colby, Morgan Zuch, and Maddy Gragg. They finished ahead of RIT, Williams B, Manhattan College, William Smith, and more. The last event of the morning in Saratoga for Marist was the Women's Novice 4+s. Marist had three entries in this event. Breana Pelliccio, Kassandra Nicholson, Regina McAdam, Clare Reilly, and Alexandria Conlin composed the crew that finished in third place behind Tufts and Montreal University Rowing Team in a time of 14:12.57. In 5th place in a time of 14:59.67 was the crew of Kathryn Moody, Samantha Musso, Alexandria Steingold, Jannie Gogi, and Hilary Anderson. In 8th place in a time of 15:23.23 was the boat of Catie Stiffler, Francesca D'Ugo, Marley Gifford, Mary Schone, and Clare Falkowski. All but two of these rowers walked onto the team this September and had never rowed before that. The women had six more entries that were supposed to race on Saturday afternoon, but deteriorating conditions led to the cancellation of the remainder of the regatta. Coaches Sanford, Rigothi, and Guinan were pleased with the results of the morning races and the fall results thus far. They are an early indication of the ability of the team in the spring season.
Prior to heading indoors for the winter months, the women will head to the Fall Metro hosted by Iona on November 10th.
