Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Heads to Alabama for District L/M Championships


HANCEVILLE, Ala., November 1, 2018 – After earning its eighth straight Region Championship last week in a three-set victory over Harford Community College, the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team is now in Hanceville, Ala., to compete in the District L/M Championship hosted by Wallace State Community College-Hanceville. The Mustangs are looking for their third straight appearance in the NJCAA Div. I Women's Volleyball National Championship Tournament. Both teams that make Sunday's Championship Match will earn a berth in the NJCAA National Championships. The Tournament champion will be named the District L representative, with the runner-up representing District M at the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. from Nov. 15-17. MUSTANG LEADERS Maria Camila Salazar leads the team with 260 kills in 83 sets for a team-best 3.13 kills per set. She also leads the way with a .313 hitting percentage on the season, as well as 48 blocks and 0.58 blocks per set. Karla Figueroa is second with 254 kills and 3.02 kills per set. She has a team-high 33 service aces, and is second with 239 kills (2.85 per set). Maryorie Cruz Baez is the team leader with 450 assists on the season, as well as with 5.49 assists per set. She is second on the team with 29 aces. Nashally Eleutiza holds the team lead with 497 digs and 5.85 digs per set. Julia Alves and Jaddy Duarte have been great on defense with 33 and 29 blocks, respectively. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
