Monroe Mustangs Cross Country Teams Set for NJCAA National Championships

GARDEN CITY, Kan., November 8, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's and women's cross country teams have once again qualified for the NJCAA Div. I Cross Country Championships, which will be held at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kan., hosted by Garden City Community College on Saturday, Nov. 10. Both the men's and women's cross country teams have won four straight Region XV Championships. The Mustangs would have likely made it five straight region titles this year, but this season's Region XV Championship meet was canceled due to dangerous course conditions due to the effects of a nor'easter on the day of the event. The Mustangs automatically qualified for National Championships despite the Region Championship meet cancelation. The Mustangs have had a number of notable accomplishments this season. The men's team finished first overall at both the Monroe Mustang Homecoming Invitational and the JUCO Northeast Championship meets, while the women won the same two meets, as well as the Queensborough Invitational earlier in the season. The women's team also enters this weekend's national championship meet as the No. 20-ranked team in the NJCAA. Thapelo Makofane picked up a first-place finish at the Queensborough Invitational. Bonginkosi Maseko grabbed a win for Monroe at the JUCO Northeast Challenge, and earned second-place finishes at the Monroe Mustang Homecoming Invitational and the Queensborough Invitational. Claudrice McKoy has not finished worse than seventh in any meet this year, with her seventh-place finish coming in the Stony Brook Wolfie Invitational to open the season. She won both the JUCO Northeast Championship and Queensborough Invitational, while claiming second at the Monroe Mustang Homecoming Invitational and fourth place at the Louisville Classic. Faten Laribi finished second at the JUCO Northeast Championships, and took third in both the Monroe Mustang Homecoming Invitational and the Queensborough Invitational.
