Women's Soccer Edges Widener 1-0


MADISON, N.J. (November 11, 2018) - The FDU-Florham women's soccer topped team Widener University 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the Second Round of the ECAC Tournament. The Devils will advance to the ECAC Semi-Finals for the first time since 2015. Sophomore Tatiana Nieto scored her seventh goal of the season in the first half while, sophomore Ashley Paulino earned her 14th win of the season which is now the program record for wins in a season. The Devils found the back of the net in the 10th minute when Nieto received the corner from junior Lindsey Scarmozzino for a header which bounced off the post. Nieto then gathered the rebound and scored on the second header attempt. The Devils held the Pride to a single shot in the first half, which was off a free kick from 30-yards out which went wide. FDU-Florham held a 6-1 shot advantage and a 3-0 corner advantage. Sophomore Madeline Finnegan nearly doubled the lead for the Devils in the 66th when her shot beat the Pride's goalkeeper but was saved by a defender to keep the score at 1-0. In the 82nd minute, Widener had their best chance to tie the game when their leading scorer had an opportunity to tie the game, but her shot was saved by a diving Paulino to preserve the lead. With seconds winding down in the game, Hannah Berard had a shot saved by Paulino. The rebound was loose and inching toward the goal, but junior Nicolette Roberts slid and cleared the ball away just before crossing the line. The Devils will travel to McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. to take on the Green Terror at 2 p.m. Wilkes and Albright will meet in the first game at 11 a.m.
