Fordham Men’s Basketball Signs Joel Soriano Stepinac High School grad to join Rams in 2019-2020

Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham University men's basketball head coach Jeff Neubauer announced the signing of Joel Soriano (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac (St. Thomas More)) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2019-2020 season. "Joel's signing is a huge catalyst for our basketball program," said Neubauer. "His height, length, athleticism and strength make him a terrific prospect. Joel has proven to be an outstanding teammate on every team that we have watched him compete. "Joel is going to be an integral part of Fordham Basketball's future." Soriano, who is currently attending St. Thomas More Prep School in Oakdale, Conn., is a 6-9, 215-pound center who averaged 5.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and a team-high 2.3 blocks per game as a senior at Stepinac in 2017-2018. He helped the Crusaders win their first CHSAA 'AA' city championship since 1960 in Fordham's Rose Hill Gym last March, and the school's first Federation tournament title ever. Stepinac closed out the year ranked number one in the state. Soriano also competes with the Dominican National Team, participating in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship last June in Canada where he averaged 8.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 1.5 assists/game in six games. Soriano chose Fordham over offers from Illinois, South Carolina, Western Kentucky, Iona, Manhattan, Stony Brook, Old Dominion, La Salle and Florida International. "Joel has played every phase of basketball at the highest level," said Neubauer. "As a high school player, his Stepinac team was one of the best high school teams that I have ever seen. AAU wise, Joel plays for the PSA Cardinals which is one of the best organizations in the country. As an international player, Joel has competed for the Dominican Republic against the best players in the world in his age group. Now, as a student at St. Thomas More, he is playing for Jere Quinn who is one of the most accomplished prep school coaches ever."
