MEN'S BASKETBALL SIGNS TWO

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s basketball team has announced the signing of two student-athletes in the early signing period to join the team starting next season. The Great Danes will welcome Mitch Doherty and Trey Hutcheson to next year’s roster.

“We are thrilled to add Trey and Mitch to the UAlbany family,” said head coach Will Brown. “They are high-character guys who value an education and are talented basketball players. They will be tremendous additions to our program, the athletic department, university, and community. We are looking forward to helping them grow and develop as people, students, and players.”

Doherty is a 6’ 7”, 220-lb forward from Acton, Mass. He currently attends Worcester Academy in Worcester, Mass. Last year, he averaged 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists in the NEPSAC AA Division for Worcester Academy. Doherty plays AAU ball for BABC on the prestigious Nike EYBL Circuit, where he averages 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists a game. BABC has produced hundreds of Division I players, dozens of whom have gone on to play professionally in the NBA or elsewhere.

“Mitch is a talented, versatile, and skilled forward who has a great feel for the game,” said Brown. “He is an elite level passer and a crafty scorer. He has the unique ability to make his teammates better on a daily basis. He seems to always be one play ahead of the competition. Mitch is a program guy who understands what it takes to be successful.”

Hutcheson was an All-State Second Team selection a year ago in Iowa, and an All-Conference and All-Metro First Team selection. He expects to score his 1,000th career point during the upcoming season.

“Trey has great size for a wing and can really shoot the ball from the perimeter,” said Brown. “He has a high basketball IQ and is sneaky athletic. We have enjoyed success over the years recruiting the state of Iowa. Four former Great Danes from the Hawkeye state have helped our program get to the NCAA Tournament. We expect Trey will bring a winning mentality and competitive fire to our program.”

UAlbany is currently 2-2 this season and plays its next game Tuesday night against Holy Cross at SEFCU Arena.
