Huge Second Quarter Keys Women's Basketball's 69-47 Victory at Queens


FLUSHING, N.Y. – A dominant second quarter helped the LIU Post women's basketball team pull away from the Queens College Knights during a 69-47 victory inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 8. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 in East Coast Conference play with the win and 8-1 overall on the year, while Queens dips to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in league play. Senior Shannon Doyle led LIU Post with 15 points and five steals. Freshman Ja'Lyn Armstrong contributed 13 points to go with three blocks and redshirt-junior Taylah Hudson chipped in 12 points. Graduate student Sasha Patterson posted her fourth-consecutive double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Anita Mikowski tallied her first collegiate points with a three-pointer during the fourth quarter and followed up with a made free throw for four points. Despite trailing 8-3 early, the Pioneers rallied back with 12 of the next 14 points to take a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. The momentum continued into the second stanza when the Green and Gold outscored the Knights, 27-13 to enter the halftime break with a commanding 42-23 advantage. LIU Post's defense stepped up during the final 20 minutes of action, limiting Queens to just 8-of-35 (.229) shooting overall, including a 0-for-7 effort from beyond the arc. Junior Mikaiya Moore registered three of the Pioneers 10 blocks during the half. The Pioneers return to the Pratt Recreation Center for two ECC contests next weekend when they host Daemen College on Friday, Dec. 14 and Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday, Dec. 16.
