Thoroughbreds light it up in 7-3 win over Johnson & Wales Suffolk University Next Game


PAWTUCKET, R.I.—The Skidmore College hockey team scored the game's first four goals on the way to a 7-3 New England Hockey Conference win over Johnson & Wales University Friday night. The win moves the Thoroughbreds to 5-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the NEHC. The Wildcats are 3-6-2 and 1-5-1. Six different players scored for Skidmore. It was the highest goal total since a 7-3 win over Castleton State on Feb. 5, 2016. The Thoroughbreds dominated play early, but it took the 17th shot on goal of the first period to solve JWU goalie Mike Rockwell. Austin Rook scored from Matt Muzyka and Adam Moodie at 19:28. Corey Morgan quickly made it 2-0 22 seconds later from Rook and Avery Steele. Skidmore extended the lead to 4-0 in the second. Campbell tallied his third of the season from Misha Mrotchek at 4:00. Will Steele scored 1:04 later from Paul Vella and Rook. The Wildcats got on the board at 7:56 when Ryan Sele found the net at 7:56. Muzyka responded with his eighth of the year from Reid Russell and Adam Moodie at 9:44, chasing Rockwell. Russell then set-up Campbell for his second goal of the game at 19:54 and a 6-1 lead. The Wildcats scored :36 into the third period to cut it to 6-2. Skidmore responded again when Mrotchek found the net for his first goal of the season from Sam Loizeaux at 11:38. JWU snuck one in at 19:23 for the 7-3 final. Skidmore outshot the home team 39-18. Brian Kowalski had 15 saves for the win, improving to 1-1-1. Rockwell took the loss with 24 saves over the first 25:04. Tyler Ellor allowed one goal and had two saves in 13:12 and Joe Noonan gave up two goals in 21:44. The Thoroughbreds finish the road trip on Saturday against Suffolk University at 7 p.m.
