Huge Third Quarter Lifts Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball over SUNY Sullivan

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 15, 2018 – Fueled by a 26-7 margin in the third quarter, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team picked up a 65-46 victory over SUNY Sullivan Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 9-3 on the season with the win, while the Generals drop to 8-5. Things got off to a tough start for the Mustangs, as the Generals rolled to a quick 8-0 lead in the first. Devon Adams halted the run with a pair of free throws for the Mustangs. Aneisha Lyons added two more foul shots, but then the Generals made three free throws of their own to take an 11-4 edge. Courtney Irabor followed with a three off the glass to bring Monroe back within four. The Mustangs rallied to grab a 17-14 lead, but Traynise Delaney made a pair of shots from the charity stripe for the Generals to cut the deficit to one heading to the second quarter. The Generals opened the second frame with a quick 6-0 run after back-to-back threes. A layup by Delany made it a 24-17 lead for the Generals before Trayvell Jenkins and Destiny Jennings both made twos to get within three. Another four points by Jennings and Phyness Baldwin made it a one-point game. Baldwin then scored on a fast break to put the Mustangs up, 27-26. Jade Walls made a layup to put Sullivan back on top, but Baldwin drained a jumper at the buzzer to leave the Mustangs ahead, 29-28, at the break. Sullivan opened the second half with a bucket from Jordan Meaurie Pickett, but the Mustangs followed with a 10-point run to go up, 39-30. After a free throw for Sullivan, the Mustangs picked up another six points to take a 14-point lead. The Generals scored another two, but the Mustangs responded with five more points. The Generals scored two more, but the Mustangs added the final four to take a 55-35 advantage into the fourth quarter. The final frame got off to a slow start, but India Keene scored at the 6:32 mark for the first points of the fourth. Jozai Vazquez followed with another layup to make it a 24-point game with 6:05 on the clock. The Generals went on a 9-2 run to get back within 17 with 1:35 to play, but the Mustangs held on to win by 19. Baldwin and Adams led the Mustangs with 10 points apiece, while Baldwin had three steals and Adams blocked three shots. Lyons added eight points and a team-high five assists. Jennings finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, while Vazquez matched her 10 rebounds and added six points. The Mustangs will play next on Thursday, Dec. 27, when they take on CCBC-Catonsville as part of the National Title IX Holiday Invitational in Washington, D.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
