McKinnon, Brown Get Red Hawks Back on Winning Track, 72-61
Glassboro, NJ – Junior ALEX MCKINNON and sophomore TAYLOR BROWN each scored 17 points as Montclair State snapped its two-game losing streak with a 72-61 victory over Rowan University at the Esby Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Senior DOMONIQUE WIRSING added seven points and nine rebounds for the Red Hawks (10-4, 6-1 NJAC), who were in action for the first time since December 20. Alexis Kriley had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Profs (7-7, 5-2 NJAC). Tied 8-8 in the first quarter, Montclair closed out the period with a 12-2 run. Wirsing hit one free throw and followed with a layup making the score 11-8. After a field goal by Rowan's Olivia Rulon, MSU tallied nine points in the final 1:46. Freshman TRISHA PETERSON drilled a three and KIM CALLOWAYsank three foul shots extending the lead to 17-10. Peterson connected for another three-pointer giving the Red Hawks a 20-10 advantage. Brown began the second with a three-pointer pushing the lead to 13 points and her second triple along with a layup by McKinnon widened the lead to 33-17 with 4:41 remaining. McKinnon scored four straight later in the quarter sending Montclair State into the break with a 39-20 halftime. JULIA SUTTON converted a three-point play in the third to give Montclair State its largest lead at 50-25 however Rowan chipped away at the deficit pulling within 56-44 heading into the final period. Kriley's layup with 8:28 to go in the fourth got Rowan within 56-48 however McKinnon drained a three to push the lead back to double-digits. The Profs would get no closer than nine point the rest of the way. Peterson finished with nine points while Calloway had eight along with three rebounds. Wirsing and KAYLA BUSH totaled seven points each for Montclair State. The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, January 9 with another road contest. Montclair will be in Camden, NJ to face the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC matchup at 6:00 pm.
