Katonka's Hat Trick Helps Propel No. 1/2 Women's Ice Hockey Past Buffalo State, 6-0
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Freshman forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) tallied four points on a goal and three assists, as the No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team completed a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) weekend sweep over Buffalo State with a 6-0 victory over the Bengals Sunday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 1 in the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll and No. 2 in the D3hockey.com Women's Top-10 Poll. Sophomore forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) scored twice, while freshman forward Moe Tsukimoto (Sapporo, Japan/Northwood School) and senior forwards Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) and Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) each finished with two points on a goal and an assist. The Cardinals held a 59-16 edge in shots on goal and went 3-for-5 on the power play. The Bengals, meanwhile, were scoreless on five power-play chances, which included a 5-on-3 for 45 seconds in the third. Plattsburgh State rises to 13-2-0 overall (8-0-0 NEWHL) with the win and next visits SUNY Cortland on Friday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. to open up a two-game weekend series with the Red Dragons. Buffalo State falls to 5-8-2 overall (2-5-1 NEWHL) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. Songin scored 2:09 into the game to put the Cardinals on the board early, as Unsworth took a shot that was saved before Songin collected the puck along the back wall. Songin came out in front of the goal along the left post and backhanded a shot glove side past the Bengal goaltender. Tsukimoto also had an assist on the play. Katonka netted her first goal of the game exactly three minutes later on the power play, as sophomore defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) wristed a shot from the slot that was saved before Katonka banged in the rebound. Unsworth was also credited with an assist. Unsworth scored unassisted with 6:02 gone in the first, intercepting a Bengal pass along the end boards behind the Buffalo State goal, coming out from behind the goal line along the left post and wrapping a shot around the goaltender that crossed the goal line low glove side. Millen added to the lead at 7:41 of the second. Freshman defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) carried the puck into the Bengal zone before freshman forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) gained possession behind the goal line. Whitney took a shot that was turned aside with a pad save by sophomore goaltender Bri Gawronski, and after the rebound trickled to the back wall, Millen took control. Millen skated out in front of the net and took a shot high glove side that clanged off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net. Katonka buried her second power-play marker of the game with 15:37 elapsed in the second period, one-timing a pass from senior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) that deflected off Gawronski and went past the goal line. Unsworth also earned an assist on the goal. Finally, Tsukimoto closed out scoring with a power-play goal 10:32 into the third. Songin centered a pass to Millen in the slot, and Millen touched the puck briefly before a Bengal stick redirected it to Tsukimoto. Tsukimoto then scored high glove side from inside the left face-off circle. Senior goaltender Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) made four saves in the first period before freshman goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) turned aside 12 shots in 40:00 of action in the second and third periods. Gawronski made 53 saves in the loss for Buffalo State.
