Men's Swimming Places Second, Women Finish Fourth at Skyline Conference Championships


The Maritime College men's swimming team placed second at the Skyline Conference Swimming and Diving Championships for the third straight year, while the women finished fourth for the third consecutive season as well. MEN'S RECAP The team of Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), Alex Baros (Phoenix, AZ/Brophy College Preparatory), and Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) got things started with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as they picked up 24 points and a time of 1:43.58. Daniel Walsh (Naugatuck, CT/Sacred Heart) kept the momentum going in the 1000 yard freestyle as he added another third-place finish by recording a time of 10:26.46. Troy tallied another 10 points for the Privateers with a top-five finish in the 100-yard backstroke by finishing with a time of 56.70. Marino and Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) then combined for 13 points in the 100-yard breaststroke by placing seventh and ninth, respectively. Maritime put together a strong performance in the 200-yard butterfly as they totaled an impressive 39 points behind a second place finish from Walsh, a sixth-place finish from Baros, seventh-place by Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach), eighth-place by Zach Woolley (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie), 10th-place by Jesse Pierce(Broadway, Va./Broadway), and 11th-place by Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional). In the 50-yard freestyle, Wu and Marino tallied points for the Privateers as they tied with a time of 23.36. In the one-meter diving event, Harry Daghir (Havre de Grace, Md./Aberdeen) and Joseph Montano (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) picked up 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Maritime. Following the diving, Walsh continued his solid performance at the championships by finishing third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.84. Troy then picked up nine more points by placing sixth in the 200-yard backstroke. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Folan, Marino, and Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) earned 18 points for the Privateers by finishing sixth, eighth, and ninth, respectively. The 500-yard freestyle saw Maritime pick up 19 points behind Walsh, Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), Pierce, and Thomas Murray. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Wu, Troy, Walsh, and John Moloney (Selkrik, NY/Bethlehem Central) placed second and picked up 26 points for the Privateers with a time of 3:22.59. WOMEN'S RECAP Katherine Green (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence), and Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) kicked off the event by picking up 22 points in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:02.19 and a fourth-place finish. Aaron then got back in the pool for the next event and placed sixth with a time of 11:51.50, breaking her own program record. Green and Brow then combined for 13 points in the 200-yard freestyle with sixth and ninth-place finishes, respectively. Zink continued the strong performances for the Privateers by picking up 11 total points in the next two events. She finished with a time of 1:12.30 in the 100-yard backstroke and then a time of 1:20.23 in the 100-yard breaststroke as she placed ninth and seventh-place, respectively. Aaron then tallied 11 points with a time of 2:25.93 in the 200-yard butterfly. In the 50-yard freestyle, Green finished seventh with a time of 27.18 while Brow was right behind her in ninth place with a time of 27.50. In the one-meter diving event, Macy Blakeley (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) finished third and picked up 12 points with a score of 238.90. Green then continued to put up points for the Privateers as she placed seventh and tallied seven points in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.33.
