Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball Races Past SUNY Sullivan 97-53, in Final Game of Regular Season
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 23, 2019 – The Monroe Mustangs men's basketball team capped off the 2018-19 regular season with their 13th-straight victory, a 97-53 win over the SUNY Sullivan Generals on Saturday at the Monroe Athletic Complex. After the Generals hit two quick threes to open the first half, the Mustangs scored 25 of the next 30 to take a 25-11 lead midway through the first half. Sullivan cut the lead down to single digits with just over 10 minutes to play before halftime, but the Mustangs went on another huge run, this time outscoring the Generals, 25-9, over the next 8:27 to take a 24-point, 50-26 lead, their largest lead of the first half. The Mustangs, led by Zion Styles' 12 first-half points, took a 50-30 lead into the locker room, shooting 51.4 percent from the floor. Monroe continued their hot shooting to start the second half, extending their lead to 32 and forcing another Generals' timeout with 16:09 to play. The Mustangs outscored SUNY Sullivan 14-2 over the first four minutes of the second half, shooting 75 percent from the field. And the Mustangs wouldn't stop there, extending their lead out to 43 as Monroe outscored SUNY Sullivan, 25-2 to start the second half. The Mustangs led by as many as 55 before Sullivan closed the gap over the final three minutes with a 13-2 run, as Monroe picked up the 97-53 victory.
