Mustangs JV Men’s Basketball Falls Short against OSL in AIPGCC Championship Game


NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 11, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team could not overcome a first-half deficit, falling to top-seed and defending American Independent Post Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) Champion Our Saviour Lutheran Monday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex in the AIPGCC Championship game. Both teams were evenly matched early in the first, as neither team was able to take a lead larger than three points over the first 10 minutes. A slow 13-0 run for the Falcons then put them up, 26-14, with 8:14 left in the half. The Falcons went up by as many as 15 points before a 9-2 run for Monroe put the Mustangs back within eight with 1:29 left before the break. OSL closed out the half on an 8-1 run, taking a 45-30 lead into the locker room. Anthony Monti led the Mustangs with 13 points at the break. Aaron Burton added seven points and a team-high five rebounds. The Falcons kept their momentum up early in the second half, hanging on to a 15-point lead with just under 14 minutes left on the clock. A 7-1 run for the Mustangs brought them back within single digits, but the Falcons responded with an 11-1 run to take a 19-point advantage with 8:14 left to play. The Falcons did not let up, earning their way to a 19-point win for the title. Monti was named the AIPGCC Sportsmanship Award winner for his efforts throughout the tournament. Monti and Luis Quinones led the Mustangs with 17 points apiece on Monday. Burton finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points with a game-high 15 rebounds. The Mustangs finish the season with a 23-9 record, the most wins in program history.
