Women’s Rowing Opens Season At Ivy League Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women's rowing team will head to Lake Carnegie on Sunday, April 7, to participate in the second annual Ivy League Invitational, facing No. 9 Yale and Columbia in the morning session, before taking on No. 5 Princeton and No. 14 Radcliffe in the afternoon for the Class of '75 Cup. The event will not impact the eventual Ivy Women's Rowing Championships, set for May 19 on the Cooper River, but will allow Ivy programs to compete twice against different league opponents, while giving rowing fans an opportunity to see squads throughout the league. All eight Ivy League programs will be in action at the event. THE CLASS OF '75 CUP: The Class of '75 Cup was donated by five graduates of Princeton's class of 1975 and is given to the winner of the first varsity eight race between Cornell, Princeton and Radcliffe. THE SERIES VS. PRINCETON/RADCLIFFE: The Big Red has won the Class of '75 Cup just once, earning the victory during the 1983 season. Princeton holds the all-time advantage with 27 victories, while Radcliffe has won the cup 14 times. The Tigers have won eight of the last nine cups, including four in a row, with Harvard earning the victory in 2014. THE SERIES VS. COLUMBIA: Cornell first rowed against the Lions in 1990 and Columbia holds a 10-9 advantage in head-to-head races. From 2000 to 2013 the Lions rowed as guests at the Dunn Bowl, but most recently the crews met at the inaugural Ivy League Invitational in 2018. UP NEXT: The Big Red is back in action when it travels to New Haven to take on Yale in the race for the Cayuga Cup on Saturday, April 13. SUNDAY RACING SCHEDULE MORNING SESSION Heat 1 – Princeton (1), Dartmouth (2), Penn (3), Harvard (4) Heat 2 – Yale (1), Brown (2) Heat 3 – Cornell (1), Columbia (2)
