Monroe Mustangs Baseball Edges out Win in Low-Scoring Battle with Mercer County
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 10, 2019 – Gustavo Gonzalez's eighth-inning RBI single proved to be the difference, as the Monroe College Mustangs baseball team defeated Mercer County Community College, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Dick Caswell Field. The Mustangs improve to 16-18 overall with the win, while the Vikings drop to 22-8. The Vikings got on the board first in Wednesday's contest with a short rally in the top of the third. With runners on first and second, Greg Delgado dropped a single into right-center, scoring a run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs responded by quickly loading the bases in the bottom of the third. Joe Rosselli then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Iasid Bernal to tie the game at 1-1. With just one hit prior to the eighth frame, the Mustangs finally broke through in the home half of the eighth. Bernal was hit by a pitch, and then Neifi Mercedes singled on a bunt that left runners on the corners. Two batters later, Gonzalez singled through the left side, plating a run to give the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage. Mustang starter Ricky Otero pitched well in the win, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six across six frames, but he left with the score tied and did not factor into the decision. Widiel Soto picked up the win for the Mustangs with two innings in relief, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts to improve to 2-2. Scott Matthews came on in the ninth, striking out two batters without allowing a baserunner to earn his first save. Viking starter Eric Cartafalsa allowed two runs in 7.1 frames to shoulder the loss and fall to 4-1. The Mustangs made the most of their three hits in Wednesday's win. Gonzalez finished 1-for-3 with what proved to be the game-winning RBI single in the eighth. Chris Javier batted 1-for-1, while Mercedes hit 1-for-2. Rosselli batted 0-for-3, but picked up an RBI after knocking in the Mustangs' first run with a sacrifice fly. Riding a five-game winning streak, the Mustangs will hit the road on Sunday, April 14, to visit the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick, R.I. Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
