Baseball Rolls To 17-6 Victory At Saint Peter's


Jersey City, NJ – The Wagner College baseball team erupted for a season-high 17 runs on a season-best 22 hits in posting a 17-6 midweek victory over the Saint Peter's University Peacocks on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Seahawks move to 12-20 overall while the Peacocks fall to 2-28 on the season. Eight of the nine Wagner starters had at least one hit while senior Anthony Pecora and junior Freddy Sabido led the offensive barrage at the plate with four hits apiece. Pecora and junior RF Griffin Schneider led the Seahawk offense with four RBs apiece in today's victory. Sabido came around to score a team-leading four times while Pecora and fellow classmate, Joe Silvestrone, scored three runs apiece. Junior right-hander Ryan Lauk (1-2) earned the win after starting the contest with three shutout innings in which he didn't allow a hit while striking out four with two walks. Edwin Feliciano and Nicholas Sciubba led the way for SPU with two hits apiece while Jared Paladino drove in two RBIs in today's setback. Ledwin Nunez was saddled with the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year, after giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and not being able to get out of the first inning. Wagner put up four runs in the opening inning in taking a 4-0 lead. Pecora led off the contest with a solo shot to right field to put the visitors on the board. With one out in the frame, the Green & White tacked on three more scores as junior Tyler Sanfillippo delivered a two-run single to center that made it 3-0 before crossing the plate himself on an RBI base knock from sophomore catcher Brandon Hall. The Seahawks continued the scoring in the second with three more tallies in upping the lead to 7-0. Sabido led off with a single and scored on a RBI base knock to center from Silvestrone. Senior Will Johnson singled to left and moved all the way to third as Silvestrone score on the play to make it 6-0. Schneider plated home the final run of the inning on a RBI grounder to second. The Green & White notched two more scores in its half of the third in taking a 9-0 lead. Johnson recorded his second RBI of the contest with an infield single to shortstop before Schneider mirrored him with a run-scoring single to left. Saint Peter's got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Hunter Mason doubled to left field, scoring Edwin Feliciano, who led off the SPU fourth with a walk from junior reliever Keaton Freire. Wagner responded right back in the fifth with two scores in taking an 11-1 lead. Schneider collected his fourth RBI of the day with a double to left, plating home Silvestrone and Sabido. The Peacocks was able to chip into the Wagner lead in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run inning that cut the lead to 11-5. Jared Paladino sent RBI single to left that scored SPU's second run of the game. The home team added three more scores on a fielder's choice, Paladino stole home and Andrew Connor scored on a Chris Marquart RBI single that made it 11-5. Wagner answered with a five-run seventh that made it 16-5 as freshman Shamus Connolly ripped an RBI single to center before Pecora clubbed his second round-tripper of the contest, a three-run shot to right that made it 15-5. Sabido added a solo home run of his own to make it 16-5. Paladino added another RBI on a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the inning that brought the lead back to ten before the Seahawks scored the final tally of the contest on a RBI grounder by sophomore Mike Ruggiero. Wagner resumes Northeast Conference (NEC) play, starting on Thursday, as the Seahawks embark on a three-game road series at Mount St. Mary's.
