Hunter Captures 2019 ECAC Division III Men's Volleyball Championship


HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Apr. 22, 2019) - The Hunter College men's volleyball team got two wins Saturday to capture the 2019 ECAC Division III Championship. The Hawks defeated Ramapo College in three sets to advance to the final, where they took down top-seeded Juniata College in an exciting five-set match. Hunter finished off Ramapo in the semifinals to start the day, sweeping the Roadrunners by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20. The team recorded a .265 hitting percentage in the match, as Christian Maisonet led the team with nine kills. Blake Hogan posted seven kills and just one error in the win, while Alec Helford registered a team-high 27 assists and six digs. The Purple and Gold went on to face Juniata in the championship match and won the first two sets (25-20, 25-22), before dropping the third and fourth (19-25, 19-25). The Hawks would close it out in the fifth set (15-13) for the title. Hunter trailed Juniata 11-8 in the final set of the match, but back-to-back kills from Michael Jazgarski pulled the Hawks within one at 11-10. A kill from Maisonet eventually gave Hunter the lead, but the Eagles responded to even the score at 13-apiece. The Hawks went on to secure the victory, with Maisonet and Hogan putting down kills to earn the 15-13 win for the ECAC title. The Hawks hit .271 in the match, as Maisonet led the effort with 24 kills. Hogan followed with 14 kills and Cyrus De Guzman added 11. Chris Scandole guided the Hunter defense with 17 digs in the match, while Helford tallied a season-high 62 assists.
