No. 11 Monroe Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Competes at Tom Farrell Classic for Final Tune-Up before


QUEENS, N.Y., May 5, 2019 – The No. 11-ranked Monroe College men's outdoor track and field team had a successful final tune-up before the 2019 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Tom Farrell Classic, hosted by St. John's University at Queens College on Friday and Saturday. Chukwusom Enekwechi was impressive in his two field events. He took second in the hammer throw of 49.95 meters, a new personal-best distance. Enekwechi then claimed second in the shot put event with a distance of 16.80 meters, which qualifies him for the NJCAA Outdoor Championships in the event. The men's 4x100 relay team of Bervensky Pierre, Kurt Modeste, Giano Roberts and Phillip Marcelle won the event with a time of 41.33, impressively setting a new meet record and qualifying them for the event at the NJCAA Championships. Pierre took first in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.59 seconds to cross the line first and qualify for NJCAA Championships. Kwasi Issac ran the race in 11.58 seconds. Roberts took the gold in the men's 110-meter hurdles on Saturday. He finished the race in 14.22 seconds, setting a new meet record in the event. Three Mustangs competed in the 400-meter dash. Modeste took second place overall with a season-best time of 47.70 in the event. Christopher Spellman clocked in at 51.06, while Phelani Maduwa ran a personal-best outdoor time of 51.32 seconds in the race. Maduwa came back later to run in the 800-meter dash, setting another career-best time after finishing in 1:55.83. Keron Charles was close behind with a time of 1:56.27. Shaquille Barzey clocked in at 2:03.58. Thapelo Makofane and Bonginkosi Maseko both ran in the 1,500-meter run on Saturday. Makofane ran a personal-best time of 4:04.81 to take third place. Maseko was right behind in fourth with a time of 4:12.10. Maseko also competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event. He took first place with a season-best time of 9:44.14, qualifying for the NJCAA Championships as well. Edwin Rosario ran in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 23.66 seconds. The Mustangs will now prepare for the 2019 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will take place from Thursday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18, in Hobbs, N.M.
