Hampton Storms Back to Narrowly Claim 2019 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship


ROCK HILL, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The 2019 Hampton men’s track & field team won its first ever Big South Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship title on Friday night, with a final total of 188.5 points. Campbell finished second with 181 points, Charleston Southern finished third at 145 points and High Point secured fourth with 113.5 points. USC Upstate took fifth with 86 points, Winthrop finished at the sixth spot with 66 points and UNC Asheville rounded out the standings with 33 points, respectively. In the first event of the day, Campbell’s Ronald Henderson Jr. took the top spot in the high jump with a height of 2.11m, and last year’s champion Jalen Hodges of Winthrop grabbed second at 2.05m. The top three was rounded out by Charleston Southern Buccaneer Frankie Thomas at 2.20m. Track got its day started in the 4x100m relay, when USC Upstate got its first win Friday after they crossed the finish line in 40.55, while Campbell finished in a time of 41.16 for second. Hampton narrowly followed to round out the top three at 41.18. USC Upstate’s Tony Auguste claimed first in the hammer throw after he captured a distance of 55.68m. The second-place finisher for the second year in a row was JP Caglione from Charleston Southern after he threw for a distance of 54.08m, and his teammate Seth Wolfe rounded out the all-conference team with a 52.51m throw. Campbell senior Noah Tyson claimed the outdoor triple jump title at a distance of 15.54m. Charleston Southern’s Timothy Davis jumped for a mark of 15.18m for second, while Evan Hailes of Winthrop went for a distance of 15.15m for a third-place finish.
