Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Announces Seven Athletes Moving on to NCAA Div. I and NAIA Programs


NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., June 6, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team has announced the placement of seven student-athletes moving on to four-year schools at the NCAA Division I or NAIA levels. George Asomani, Caio Guazzelli and Jorge Figueroa all signed on to continue their collegiate careers with NCAA Div. I programs. Asomani, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American, will be playing at North Carolina State University next year, joining former teammate Gabriel Machado. The Mustangs leader in goals and points in 2018, Guazzelli is moving on to University of California, Riverside. An NJCAA All-America First-Team member, Figueroa will join the NCAA Div. I ranks at Florida Atlantic University. Lucas Nishioka, Takahiro Awaji, Sergio Escribano and Akindeindi Johnson are all heading to NAIA schools. Nishioka was selected as a United Soccer Coaches All-American this season, and is set to move on to Southeastern University. Keiser University will be the new home for Awaji, Escribano and Johnson, as all three will joining the Seahawks in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Mustangs qualified for the NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Championships for the third straight season in 2018, advancing to the semifinals before ultimately succumbing to top-seed, and eventual champion Pima Community College. The Mustangs earned their spot in the national tournament by winning the 2018 Northeast District Championship after first claiming the 2018 Region XV Title. Monroe finished the season with a 12-2-2 overall record and ranked No. 3 in the nation in the final 2018 NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Rankings.
