Alex Delaney Signs for UC Capitals in Australia’s WNBL for ’19-20

CANBERRA, AU – Former St. Francis Brooklyn student-athlete Alex Delaney has signed a professional contract in her native Australia, with the Canberra Capitals in the Women's National Basketball League for the 2019-20 season. Delaney previously played for the Queensland Basketball League's Mackay Meteorettes during the 2018-19 season. The defending WNBL champions from a season ago are looking forward to the addition of the former Terrier to their title defense squad. The head coach of the Capitals, Paul Goriss had a few nice words to say about Delaney. "Alex is an up and coming player and wanted an opportunity to be a part of the UC Capitals." "Alex wanted the opportunity to come and work on her game and thought the UC Capitals was the best fit for her to improve her game and skill package," During the 2018-19 season, Delaney signed with the Mackay Meteorettes in the Queensland Basketball League, where she averaged 13 points-per-game and six rebounds. The Australian native also shot 37% from beyond-the-arc. "I believe the UC Capitals have some outstanding and experienced players that can help me get better both on and off the court." "I also believe Paul Goriss is a great and experienced coach who can help me grow as a player. I have heard excellent things about his style of play and I'm looking forward to working with him to develop my game and take it to the next level. "I believe the things that I can bring to the team are a strong work ethic and love for the game. My ability to shoot the ball from the 3-point line and ability to find the open player. I hope to be a great teammate and continue to learn and develop my game," said Delaney, on the evening of her signing.

Delaney, a four-year star in the Terriers uniform, ranks fourth on the all-time career three-pointers list with 168 and ranks eighth all-time on the program's three-point field goal percentage list (.344). The Australian native played all four years on Remsen Street for former head coach John Thurston. At St. Francis, she would average 8.4 points-per-game and would average 3.7 rebounds per game. Delaney was also one steal shy of 100 in her career. Alex would eventually have her best season as a senior by averaging 11.5 points-per-game and score a total of 345 during the 2017-18 season.
