Men's hoops adds to talent with transfer DeJavaughn Utley
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Men's basketball coach Evan Conti has a new addition to his 2019-20 squad. DeJavaughn Utley has transferred to New York Tech from Adelphi and will join the Bears for the upcoming season. Utley, a 6-foot-2 guard, played alongside new teammate Collins Onyeike for two Queens PSAL championships at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. As a freshman at Adelphi last season, Utley averaged 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. He had a career-high 28 points against Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 28, 2018. Later in the season, he produced eight points in 20 minutes in a victory against New York Tech in Garden City. "DeJavaughn brings us athleticism and experience at a wing position," Conti said. "He's a proven winner who, alongside Collins, led Cardozo to a PSAL championship game when they were seniors." Utley joins Tim Dawson as newcomers to the Bears for 2019-20. Dawson, a 6-1 point guard, hails from New Haven, Conn., and arrives from Hamden Hall Country Day School. Conti, who served as interim head coach for the final two games of last season, took over the reins on a permanent basis on May 2.
