Monroe Football Holds No. 15 Ranking in First NJCAA Poll


CHARLOTTE, N.C., September 4, 2019 – After a dominant season-opening victory this past weekend, the Monroe College football team held on to the No. 15 spot in the first week of the NJCAA Football Rankings, as announced by the NJCAA on Tuesday. With a lot of movement going on in the Top 20, the Mustangs held tight to their No. 15 ranking after opening the season with a win. Monroe shutout the New Jersey Warriors to the tune of a 71-0 victory at Joseph F. Fosina Field this past Saturday. The Mustangs held a 58-0 lead by halftime in the win, and spent most of the second half keeping the clock running. Dominant in all facets of the game on Saturday, the Mustangs earned all three Northeast Football Conference (NEFC) weekly individual awards. Quarterback Dominique Shoffner was named NEFC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing four touchdowns and rushing for another in less than a half of work. Cornerback Emmanuel Appiah-Tahkyi intercepted two passes and returned one of them for a 55-yard touchdown. Special teamer Idrissa Nikiema connected on nine extra points and combined for 38 yards on two punt returns and a kickoff return. The Mustangs will have their work cut out for them on Saturday, Sept. 7, when they host No. 19-ranked Nassau Community College at Fosina Field. The Top-20 battle in New Rochelle is set to kick off at 1 p.m.
