Sailing Opens First Weekend By Hosting Boehringer Memorial Regatta
THACA, N.Y. -- The 2019-20 Cornell sailing season will kick off with the Jack Boehringer '52 Memorial Regatta headlining the first weekend of competition. The Big Red will set out of the Merrill Family Sailing Center on Cayuga Lake on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Big Red will be looking for its third title in five years at the Boehringer, including its second consecutive. Cornell won the inaugural event in 2015, with George Washington (2016) and Hobart/William Smith (2017) also taking first place on Cayuga Lake before the Big Red's title last fall. In all, 14 schools are expected to compete with a total of 16 entries. The meet memorializes the sailor, pilot, inventor and philanthropist for which the regatta is named. In addition, Cornell will head to Kings Point for the season-opening Women's Regatta at the Merchant Marine Academy. The men will sail the Laser North qualifier, also at Kings Point. The 2018-19 campaign was one for the record books, as Cornell qualified for both the women's and coed nationals. The Big Red won six regattas (a program best), including five during the fall, four at home and one at Kings Point. Seven Cornellians earned all-MAISA honors, including returners Daisy Holthus (first team skipper), Gabby Rizika (first team skipper), Brooke Shachoy (second team skipper), Adeline Sutton (first team crew) and Sebby Turner (second team skipper). Rizika was an honorable mention All-America selection as well. Coming off the most successful season since the Big Red joined the varsity ranks in 2014, the Cornell sailing program will look to maintain and top its accomplishments as the 2018-19 season kicks off this weekend with the Jack Boehringer '52 Memorial Regatta on Saturday and Sunday out of the Merrill Family Sailing Center on Cayuga Lake.
