Late goal moves Thoroughbreds past Spartans

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Gabrielle Vaccaro scored with 3:17 left in regulation to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 3-2 win over Castleton University Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park. The Thoroughbreds move to 2-3, while the Spartans fall to 2-3. Carrie Hughes tipped-in her first collegiate goal at 20:56 from Hannah Curtis to give put Skidmore in front 1-0. Castleton evened the score on a Raven Payne goal from Allison Lowell at 28:37 for a 1-1 game at the half. Sarah Winters converted a corner from Hughes and Sophia Marshall at 39:37 to make it 2-1 Skidmore. The Spartans battled back again to tie 2-2 at 44:45 when Kaitlin Bardellini found the back of the net at 44:45. Vaccaro took advantage of chaos in the Castleton defensive end to score the game-winner at 56:43 from Hughes. Skidmore had an 11-7 shot and 6-3 corner advantage. Maddy Carre picked-up the win with two saves over 45:00 in relief of Jess Gaetgens who stopped two shots in the first quarter. Tashia Pashby-Rockwood finished with five saves for the Spartans. Skidmore is at New Paltz on Sept. 18 for a 4 p.m. start.
