Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Solidifies No. 1 Ranking in NJCAA Poll
CHARLOTTE, N.C., October 7, 2019 – Not that there were many, but the Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team silenced any doubters this past weekend with a big win to remain unbeaten, helping the Mustangs maintain the No. 1 spot in the NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Rankings, as announced by the NJCAA on Monday. The Mustangs improved to 9-0 on the season with a convincing 5-0 victory over No. 9 Mercer County Community College on Saturday in New Rochelle. Leon Sitz led the Mustangs in the win with a pair of goals, while Roque Viegas had a four-point evening with a goal and two assists. Despite the loss, Mercer County remained at the No. 9 spot in the rankings this week. As a team, the Mustangs continue to lead the country in goals scored per game with an average of 8.22. Their 74 total goals are second most in the NJCAA, trailing only Morton's 75, which was accomplished in 16 games. Monroe leads the country in shots per game with 29.7. The team's 0.67 goals-against average is sixth-best in the nation. Luca Erhardt ranks first in the nation with 2.22 goals per game, while his 20 scores on the season rank third overall. His 4.67 points per game are the second-highest average in the NJCAA, while his 42 total points are tied for fourth. His 40 points on the year rank second in the nation. Sitz sits in ninth with 10 assists on the season, but ranks third with 1.11 assists per game. The Mustangs get back to work on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they host Region XV rival ASA College at Skidelsky Field with a chance to clinch the region's regular season title. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
