Monroe Football Jumps Back up to No. 12 in NJCAA Rankings after Bounce-Back Victory


CHARLOTTE, N.C., October 21, 2019 – The Monroe College football team bounced back spectacularly from its first defeat, helping the Mustangs jump up two spots to No. 12 in the NJCAA Football Rankings for Week 8, as announced by the NJCAA on Monday. The Mustangs had previously fallen seven spots to No. 14. After suffering its first loss of the season two weeks ago to now No. 4-ranked Lackawanna College, the Mustangs responded by getting back to their winning ways. Monroe defeated Hudson Valley Community College, 53-0, on Saturday at Joseph F. Fosina Field. Quarterback Dominique Shoffner accounted for four total touchdowns, two in the air and two on the ground. The Mustangs outgained the Vikings, 471-176, in the win. The Mustangs continue to be the highest-scoring team in the NJCAA, averaging 51.4 points per game across their first seven games of the season. Monroe is eighth in the nation with 437.9 yards from scrimmage per game, while ranking 12th with 193.6 rushing yards per game and 15th with 244.3 passing yards per game. The Mustangs are tied for first in the NJCAA with 27 rushing touchdowns on the season. Monroe leads the country in total defense, allowing just 154.9 yards from scrimmage per game, and are first with an average of just 29.7 rushing yards allowed per game. Dominique Shoffner ranks third in the NJCAA with a quarterback efficiency rating of 177.8. He is 13th with 219.9 passing yards per game, and is tied for eighth with 17 passing touchdowns on the year. Shoffner is also tied for eighth in the NJCAA with eight rushing touchdowns. Running back Clayton Scott is fifth in the nation with 10 rushing touchdowns in six contests. Jevin Frett is tied for sixth in the country with seven receiving touchdowns, while his 73.8 receiving yards per game rank 15th. Emmanuel Appiah-Takyi's seven interceptions continue to lead the nation, while his 125 interception-return yards are the third most in the NJCAA. Monroe has another big game coming up on Sunday, Oct. 27, when they visit Northeast Football Conference rival, and No. 18-ranked ASA College at the Aviator Sports Complex.
