ASA Brooklyn Avengers Men's Basketball Team Held off Rivals Monroe Mustangs to Win First Regiona
New Rochelle, NY – The ASA Brooklyn Avengers men's basketball team played their first regional game of the 2019-20 season against the Monroe Mustangs.
The Mustangs scored the first point of the game while drawing contact to open 3-0, while the Avengers next possession down scored off a jumper and a minute later scored a 3-point basket to take the first lead of the game 5-3. In a back-and-forth battle between the two regional rivals, both teams proceed to trade baskets with multiple lead changes until a turnover at the 11:25 minute mark made it a two possession deficit for the Avengers. Both teams continue to trade baskets and with 5:52 to go in the 1st half, the Mustangs led the Avengers 32-27. From there, the Avengers stepped up their defensive intensity and went on a 13-1 run to end the first half up 40-33.
Both teams continue to trade baskets to start the 2nd half but with 12:25 left in the 2nd half, the Mustangs cut the Avengers lead down to 50-49 and a minute later, took back the lead. The Avengers responded with a 7-1 run, and the Avengers led 59-52 with a little over 9 minute left in the game. The Mustangs tied up the game 66 apiece with 3 minutes remaining. With the score at 68-68, the Avengers took a timeout with 1:10 remaining. Off the timeout, Jahmier Pugh scored a go-ahead basket to give the Avengers a 2-point lead. Both teams traded free throws on opposite ends, and the Avengers held on to win the game 75-71.
