Big Second Half Fuels No. 14 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer to Shutout Victory over Montgomery

ROCKVILLE, Md., September 4, 2021 – Coming off a tough opening weekend to the season, the No. 14-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team bounced back with a 5-0 shutout victory at Montgomery College Saturday evening. The Mustangs improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while the Raptors fall to 1-1.

The first half was oddly quiet, as the Mustangs appeared to be shaking off some rust. Things changed quickly in the second half when Ivan Silic potted one off an assist from Tony Yeboah in the 47th minute to give Monroe the lead. Joshua Best followed two minutes later after being set up by Silic to double the lead. Isaac Garro Coto then scored twice in a span of 6:27, the second with an assist from Nils Friebe, to make it a 4-0 game. Silic added one for good measure at the 72:00 mark to reach the eventual final score of 5-0.

Silic finished with five points on the evening after scoring twice and assisting another goal. Garro Coto totaled four points with his pair of scores.

Tomaso Lorenzi made two saves in his first start as a Mustang to pick up the shutout victory and improve to 1-0.

After Montgomery held a 5-4 edge in shots in the first half, Monroe's big second half resulted in a 22-7 advantage for the game in total shots, as well as a 16-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Mustangs are back in action this Friday, Sept. 10, when they visit Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, N.J. The game is set to kick off at 5 p.m.
