Melvin Council Jr. Tabbed as NJCAA Men’s Basketball All-American


CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 29, 2022 – One of the best seasons the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team has ever season was rewarded appropriately, as Melvin Council Jr. was named to the 2022 NJCAA Div. I Men's Basketball All-America Team as an Honorable Mention, as announced by the NJCAA on Wednesday.


Council's selection to the All-America Team makes it eight straight seasons (Monroe did not play in 2020-21) that the Mustangs have had an NJCAA All-American. Most recently, Juan Felix Rodriguez earned that honor in both 2018-19 and 2019-20.


Council produced one of the most prolific seasons in Monroe College history in 2021-22. Council finished the season ranked fifth in the NJCAA with an average of 23.8 points per game. He finished second in total points scored (763) and minutes played (1,159), and third in made field goals (281). Council also ranked second in the nation with 108 steals, and third with 3.4 steals per game. He was 14th in the NJCAA with 142 made free throws. Council was twice named the NJCAA Men's Basketball Div. I Player of the Week this year, and was picked as the 2022 NJCAA Region 15 Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Year.


The Mustangs finished the 2021-22 season with a 25-7 overall record. They advanced to the final of the Region 15/19 Championship tournament, but fell in the finals to then No. 9-ranked Harcum College at West Chester University.
